What I have discovered when analysing magazine covers...
- The main image must overlap the title
- The main image is usually of the character, not necessarily the actor in person
- The title must be bright and bold
- The background should be a block colour, usually not very birght, so the main image still attracts all of the attention.
- The cover should still contain a few other stories sometimes un-related to the film
